" the finest stretch of river, fell and scenery in Yorkshire"

Shooting Breaks

The Red Lion is set in the heart of Wharfedale where from the front door we have miles of walking available whether you are wanting a general stroll or hill/fell walking.

Maps/walking books galore, picnics, rucksacks and flasks available for guests, along with plenty of first hand advice from members of staff!

Burnsall is the first stop of the ‘Dales Way’ which runs from Ilkley to Windermere, the Red Lion being the perfect ‘stop over’ for those weary legs. Luggage can be collected by Sherpa vans – and moved to your next location.

Just to name a few of the walks from our front door:

Burnsall Fell where the oldest Fell race in Britain is held every August leads to a pick ‘n’ mix of walks including Barden, Thorpe, Top Dock and beyond.

Then there is Trollers Gill, a limestone gorge so dark and forbidding that our ancestors once feared it. They believed it to be the haunt of trolls, hence its name. According to legend these trolls would roll stones down the steep hillside onto the heads of unwary walkers! A more sinister tale is told of a wolf-like beast that lives in a cave in this ravine, with large fangs and staring eyes the size of saucers. This is the infamous Barguest, which preys on unsuspecting travellers – if your eyes meet then it is certain death! These legends have their origins in Norse mythology. Sir Arthur Conan Doyle is said to have written The Hound of the Baskervilles after hearing this tale.

Not forgetting Simon's Seat, a bulky heather-clad hill that rises up above the Wharfe, its summit crowned by gritstone outcrops that afford a wonderful view across the valley. But there is much to Simon's Seat that just the views for on its windswept summit you will find The Devil's Apronful prehistoric cairn, whilst the surrounding hills are littered with prehistoric remains including stone circles and cup-marked rocks.

Or follow the beautiful River Wharfe downstream in the direction of Bolton Abbey where you are able to view the priory ruins, abbey and the Cavendish Pavillion or… upstream in the direction of the village of Grassington where you can explore Grass woods, lea Green and its limestone paving.
